The sound and the unsound: the trans-sonic music
Viola Yip & Nicola L. Hein
Nicola L. Hein and Viola Yip formed an experimental transdisciplinary duo that creates immersive site-specific performances and installations bridging the vibrations of light and sound. Trained as musicians, both of them are interested in looking into the ontology of sound and how musical experience can be transformed beyond its common material- sound.
For their artistic research project The sound and the unsound: the trans-sonic music, they are curious about the possibilities of light as an expanded musical material. They research and create performances, improvising between lights and sounds as equally important and yet dialectical musical materials, in order to propose an alternative conception of music.
Since its inception since July 2018, the duo has been commissioned by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, as well as presented in Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, ON – Neue Musik Köln as well as Willows Nest, West Germany and Kék-ló in Berlin. We are also invited to perform at the Sonic Lab at SARC Queen’s University Belfast in February 2019.

Improvisation with field recordings captured in abandoned and working industrial areas in West Yorkshire. An acoustic reflection on post industrial Northern England soundscapes where abandoned factories and obsolete machinery are quiet reminders of the abrasive sonorities and clanking noises that once fuelled Northern England’s industrial splendour.
